Fata Morgana – places for peace

Texts by Mahmud Darwisch

Mahmoud Darwish, one of the most popular Arab poets and the preeminent contemporary Palestinian poet, possesses a unique ability to present an unvarnished portrait of his people through his verse. His poems speak of powerful emotions—of the elements that unite and those that divide, of mistrust and fear, of hope and happiness. While each poem may appear, on the surface, like a dream, it is nonetheless deeply rooted in reality. His stylistically multifaceted body of work is imbued with both linguistic power and profound sensitivity. The production "Fata Morgana" is a composition of figures, texts, and music, inviting the audience on a poetic journey. Blending the performing and visual arts, the performance carefully makes its way through the sand, approaching the lines of Mahmoud Darwish in German, French, and Arabic.

"Poetry brings people together rather than driving them apart. It reflects the wonder of the first human being, the joy found in the universe, and the fear of transience. Its purpose is to offer resistance against everything that threatens human freedom or the splendor of life."
Mahmoud Darwish

This production incorporates texts by Mahmoud Darwish from the poetry collections "Fewer Roses" (*Weniger Rosen* – translated by Khalid Al-Maaly and Heribert Becker) and "State of Siege" (*Belagerungszustand* – translated by Stephan Milich).
